본 논문은 Facebook 네트워크에서 커뮤니티 구조에 미치는 지배적 속성(dominant attributes)을 식별하는 방법론을 제시한다. Game-theoretic clustering으로 overlapping communities를 추출하고 dominance ratio와 Pearson correlation을 활용하여 각 커뮤니티에서 어떤 속성(class year, major 등)이 커뮤니티 형성에 결정적 역할을 하는지 규명한다.

Motivation

Known: 기존 연구는 전역적 관점에서 커뮤니티 구조 전체에 영향을 미치는 dominant attributes를 식별하거나(Traud et al. 사용, Rand coefficient), 또는 일반적인 커뮤니티 탐지 알고리즘(modularity 기반, label propagation 등)을 적용하는데 그쳤다. 특정 개별 커뮤니티 내에서 어떤 속성값(Attribute-Value pair)이 실제로 지배적인지를 정량화하는 방법론은 부족했다.
Gap: 기존 연구는 전역적 수준에서만 dominant attributes를 규명하여 개별 지역 커뮤니티(local community)에서 어떤 속성값이 실제 영향을 미치는지 알 수 없다는 한계가 있다. 또한 커뮤니티 크기와 밀도 같은 토폴로지 특성에 미치는 영향을 체계적으로 분석하지 못했다.
Why: 마케팅 캠페인과 타겟팅에서 기저 소셜 네트워크 구조를 모를 때도 인구통계 정보만으로 효과적으로 고객에게 도달할 수 있는 방법이 필요하다. 특정 커뮤니티 내 지배적 속성을 파악하면 네트워크 정보 없이도 세분화된 마케팅이 가능해진다.
Approach: Game-theoretic clustering 알고리즘을 이용해 overlapping communities를 탐지한 후, 각 커뮤니티 내에서 Attribute-Value 쌍의 우세도를 dominance ratio라는 정량적 지표로 정의한다. 이후 Pearson correlation을 적용하여 각 속성값이 커뮤니티 토폴로지(크기, 밀도 등)에 미치는 효과를 측정한다.
